How to apply Gardz® First, ensure surfaces are clean, dry, sound and free of contamination. Remove loose or peeling paint by sanding or scraping. If sanding or scraping old paint, especially pre-1960s paint on wood or metal, you must take precautions against lead dust. The specialised water-based sealer is designed for porous and problematic surfaces. It penetrates deeply, drying to form a tough, moisture-resistant film that effectively seals and stabilises porous, chalky, and crumbling surfaces as well as paints and textured finishes. Gardz® is also used to repair torn paper on damaged drywall and eliminate bubble, seal old wallpaper adhesive and bind down chalky surfaces. What surfaces can Gardz be used on? Zinsser Gardz® can be used on interior surfaces such as damaged drywall, new drywall, filler and joint compound skim coats, plaster, calcimine, uncoated wallpaper, wallcovering adhesive residue and textured paint. Can you use Gardz over paint? No, it is not recommended to use Gardz® over paint. Yes, when dry, Gardz® may be top coated with any standard water-based or solvent-based primer or topcoat paint. Can I use Gardz over wallpaper? You can use Gardz® over uncoated wallpaper and wallcovering adhesive residue. Can you apply Gardz over plaster? Yes, Gardz® can be applied over both new and old plaster. Allow new plaster to cure at least 24 hours. Ensure that old, bare plaster is clean, dry and in sound condition before applying. How many coats of Gardz should I apply?
